Read the Bible in this Time of the Corona Virus

The corona virus has brought a fear of illness. We have been forced into isolation, and the whole world is searching for a cure. But it is also a time of life: a search for bodily life and a search for the life of the soul. It is a time to renew our faith. It has been a time when everything almost stops, so let us fill this Corona time by reading the Bible!   In these difficult and painful days we need a compass to guide us, and our compass is the Bible.  In it, God says:  For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13 (NIV)

The Bible was written for everyone.  It is a book for individuals and it is a book for the community. It was written for every time, every place, and every circumstance in life. It makes God’s word alive and effective in our lives, because it is a book that inspires in us the desire to love and live with all people.

Reading the Bible invites us to embark on an adventure. This adventure may hold many surprises, but the most important one is discovering God’s love for us personally and for the entire globe, especially in the midst of the pain and turmoil the corona virus has brought us. The Bible was written in human language, but inspired by Gods Spirit! It can encourage us and empower us for the life we live with God and our neighbor. The Bible tells us of God’s work of salvation in the world, and it is his call to live life in all its details, with the Word of God as the center.

So, let’s dive further into how to read the Bible!

Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give us understanding of the word of the Lord. Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

Give yourself the opportunity to see in the verses you read the infinite and sublime greatness of God.

Choose short readings. The Bible is a great treasure, given to us for free; but we needn’t exhaust it quickly and all at once!

Be patient with yourself. This book contains deep wisdom, and it sometimes contains apparent ambiguity. You may not necessarily understand it at first reading, but gradually.  The two Emmaus disciples did not recognize Jesus at first!

Many people have died from the corona virus.  But the Bible is a book about life! It contains the longest story in human history, but its ending is happy and joyful! Life with Jesus Christ always triumphs over death.  That is why we call the gospel the “good new”!  In every adversity, it can renew your faith and your life!

So please let us keep on reading the Bible in our homes with all family members and friends, especially during this time of corona crisis!
